Swimmers compete during a tournament in Dar es Salaam.
The letter dated February 17, 2016 was on Wednesday presented to
the Prime Minister Majaliwa Kassim Majaliwa through the Minister For
Information, Culture, Art and Sports, Nape Nnauye.
TSA has earmarked areas which they want the government to provide
them with land so that they can construct a modern swimming pool to
develop the sport in the country .
The association informed the government that what they want is a
land as they have some swimming stakeholders and sponsors who have shown
willingness to sponsor construction of the modern swimming pools.
In the letter TSA informed the government that despite many
challenges they are facing, the association has worked hard to take
swimming in the country to another remarkable level.
TSA mentioned some of their achievements as being a full member of
International Swimming Association (FINA) and also featuring at top
international competitions.
The letter cited other challenges which they (TSA) are facing as lack of offices and swimming equipment.
“This government has shown its seriousness to develop and promote
sports in the country and it seems those hard times are close to an
end…………….what we are asking the government is a plot so that we can
construct our modern swimming pool which TSA can run it as business so
that it can generate money to operate. The association has stakeholders
and sponsors who are ready to help us financially once the land is
located to us, we have identified places which we may prefer if you give
us for the mentioned purpose, preferably Masaki, Oysterbay,
Msasani, and other places”, said part of the letter .
TSA secretary general Ramadhani Namkomveka who presented the letter
to the government in an interview could not say why his association
preferred Masaki, Msasani and Oysterbay to construct the modern swimming
pool.
In the letter, TSA also asked the government to select some
primary, secondary Schools and collages and universities where swimming
pools will be constructed to make the culture of swimming grow among
Tanzanians.
It further asks the government to work with stakeholders to build
an Olympic centre which will be used to enhance performance of local
athletes so that they can attain international qualifying time.
TSA also remind the government to honor its pledge of constructing
a 50-meters swimming pool at the National stadium during the phase two
of turning the area into a sports village.
The association also asked the government to advise all district
authorities to allocate space for construction of swimming pools saying
this will make more people in the country embrace the sport.
