The
High Court in Dodoma yesterday sentenced Kashinje Nkanda, a resident of
Ujungu Village in Iramba District, to four years in prison for killing
her mother.
Nkanda confessed before the court that she killed her mother,
Ngembe Salum after she forced her to get married to a man with whom she
(Nkanda) has no affection.
Nkanda also told the court that her mother would not allow her to
sell a cow to get money for treatment from a traditional healer.
State Attorney Seif Ahmed, claimed before Judge Awadh Mohammed that
on April 27, 2011 at unknown time in the village, Nkanda killed and
hide the body of her mother inside sacks of rice.
He said that after hiding the body, the accused locked the door to
the house and disappeared. Three days later neighbours were alerted by
an unpleasant smell coming from the house and informed the police.
The prosecutor said when a search was conducted in the house they
found the body of the deceased and arrested Nkanda while the medical
report indicated that Salum’s death was caused by suffocation.
Before the verdict, the prosecution noted that although the
defendant confessed to the crime, they still recommended the harshest of
punishment due to the level depravity of the crime.
However, the defence lawyer from Ngongi & Advocates of Dodoma,
Godwin Ngongi, requested the court to give his client a lenient
punishment on grounds that it was her first offense and she had already
been in prison for five years.
